Belfast arena at dusk, venue of the Obama Israel Gaza remarks

Former US president Barack Obama has warned that Israel risks losing its moral standing in the Gaza conflict if it continues to rely on military strength alone, making his Obama Israel Gaza remarks during a public discussion in Belfast on Tuesday. Speaking to thousands of people at the city’s O2 arena, Obama said the current Israeli government appeared to believe that, as the strongest and most technologically advanced power in the region, its security could depend on acting as it wished and making no concessions to anyone. “That may work short-term… but you have ceded moral ground if that is the position you take,” he said.

FAKTA: Obama’s Belfast remarks

  • Who: Former US president Barack Obama, in conversation with writer and journalist Susan McKay
  • Where and when: The O2 arena, Belfast, Northern Ireland, on Tuesday 13 October 2026
  • Honour: Obama received an honorary doctorate from Queen’s University Belfast earlier the same day
  • Core warning: Relying on military and technological superiority without concessions “may work short-term… but you have ceded moral ground”
  • Palestinian reality: Around seven million Palestinians “are not going anywhere”, Obama said
  • His call: A genuine halt to violence before long-term peace talks, and recognition that both sides will remain in the region

What Obama said about the Gaza conflict

Obama said the violence in Gaza should “pain everybody”, describing the conflict as a destructive cycle shaped by historical grievances, hardened attitudes and deep divisions. He began by acknowledging the long history of persecution suffered by Jewish people in Europe, saying Europe was responsible for much of it and that Jews understandably sought refuge. “That is undeniable,” he said. “What is also undeniable is that they took land off people and they were excessive.” He called the Palestinian demand to regain their land an understandable response to what they viewed as injustice.

Obama argued that the stronger side in a conflict carries a greater responsibility to break the cycle of violence. He also condemned the Hamas attack of 7 October 2023, and urged Israel’s leaders to recognise that around seven million Palestinians “are not going anywhere”, warning that imposing conditions people cannot accept would never produce lasting security.

Reactions to the Obama Israel Gaza remarks

The remarks drew swift reactions around the world. Pro-Israel campaigners accused Obama of presenting a distorted account of Israel’s history, while other commentators praised his candour about Palestinian suffering. Obama said his immediate priorities would be alleviating suffering, achieving a genuine end to violence, halting what he described as continuing encroachment into the West Bank and helping rebuild Gaza. He said achieving those goals would need real diplomatic effort and an American administration willing to engage creatively. Before the discussion, Obama had received an honorary doctorate from Queen’s University Belfast, and he compared the conflict to periods of division in Northern Ireland that were overcome through dialogue.
