Italy birth rate record low in 2026

New official figures point to an Italy birth rate record low in 2026, deepening a demographic crisis that has now run for seventeen consecutive years.

National statistics agency ISTAT said just under 197,000 babies were born in the first seven months of 2026, down 1.1 percent on the same period in 2025. The fertility rate slipped to 1.13 children per woman in January to July, below last year’s record low of 1.14.

FAKTA

  • Births in 2025: 355,772, the lowest since Italian unification in 1861.
  • Births, January to July 2026: just under 197,000, down 1.1 percent from a year earlier.
  • Fertility rate, January to July 2026: 1.13 children per woman, down from 1.14 in 2025.
  • Consecutive years of falling births: 17.
  • Average age at first child in 2025: 32.
  • Children born to unmarried parents in 2025: 44.1 percent, up from 43.2 percent.

Italy Birth Rate Record Low: What the New Figures Show

The 2025 total of 355,772 births was the lowest since Italy was unified in 1861, and the seventeenth year in a row in which births fell. Early data for 2026 suggest that run will extend, with the January to July total slightly below the same months last year.

Family patterns in the 2025 data underline how much has changed. The average age of a woman having her first child was 32, broadly unchanged from the year before, while 44.1 percent of children were born to unmarried parents, up from 43.2 percent. Sofia led girls’ names and Leonardo led boys’ names.

A Seventeen-Year Decline

Italy has recorded fewer births in each year since 2008, a long slide that has cut annual births by more than a third from the levels seen at that time. Official and independent analysis has linked the fall to later parenthood, job insecurity and the high cost of family life. Successive governments have promised to reverse the trend, but none has yet succeeded.

The wider picture shows why these figures matter. In 2025, deaths reached about 652,000, leaving a natural shortfall of close to 297,000 people. The total resident population stayed near 58.94 million only because net migration of about 296,000 almost exactly offset that gap, ISTAT said in its demographic indicators for 2025.

Why the Decline Matters

A fertility rate of 1.13 is barely more than half the level of about 2.1 children per woman generally needed to keep a population stable without migration. Over time, fewer births mean fewer young workers, a larger share of older people and heavier pressure on pensions, health care and public services. Italy has one of Europe’s oldest populations, and the birth rate is considered a national emergency.

Fuller 2026 figures will follow next year, but the early data leave little doubt about the direction of travel. More international coverage is available on Watan News.
