The Sydney Marathon, one of the world’s most prestigious running events, is facing an embarrassing situation just a week before its commencement, as the participation medal features a stadium that resembles Munich’s Allianz Arena instead of Sydney’s Allianz Stadium.

The mistake was noticed after the Sydney Marathon’s official social media account revealed the medal design, inviting users to “look closely and you’ll find the story of the course in the details”, which sparked speculation about a possible mix-up.

  • The medal appears to feature Munich’s Allianz Arena on the bottom-right, instead of Sydney’s Allianz Stadium.
  • The Sydney Marathon course runs past Allianz Stadium in Sydney, not Munich’s Allianz Arena.
  • Some 40,000 runners will participate in the event on 30 August, after more than 120,000 ballot entries.
  • The medal’s design includes a gold and indigo pattern by First Nations artist Ambrose Killian on the other face.

Sydney Marathon Organisers Under Scrutiny

The BBC has reached out to Sydney Marathon for comment, but so far, there has been no official response to the mistake.

The error has raised questions about the design process and how such a mistake could have occurred, given the significance of the event and the number of participants.

Ambrose Killian’s Contribution to the Medal Design

Ambrose Killian, the First Nations artist responsible for the gold and indigo pattern on the other face of the medal, told the BBC that he was not responsible for the other artwork, which features the mistaken stadium.

Munich and Sydney Stadium Comparison

Munich’s Allianz Arena is distinctively sculpted by thousands of diamond-shaped inflatable cushions, whereas Sydney’s Allianz Stadium has a flatter façade smoothed with long bronze fins, making the mistake even more noticeable.
