Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and the city’s Department of Environment announced the Chicago Youth Climate Action Fund on 5 October 2026, opening applications for microgrants of $1,000 to $5,000 that put young people aged 15 to 24 in charge of designing and delivering climate projects in their own neighborhoods. The initiative is part of a global movement pairing city halls with youth-led climate action.

According to the official City of Chicago portal, funded projects must address local environmental challenges — from environmental justice and waste reduction to community gardens, peer education, social media campaigns and preparing neighborhoods for extreme heat — and must support the goals of the Chicago Climate Action Plan.

How the Chicago fund works

The fund awards microgrants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 to youth-led projects. According to the launch announcement, projects must be proposed, designed and led by at least two young people, working in partnership with a sponsoring nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.

The city’s portal says staff support young participants from the idea stage through to completion, helping them carry their plans across the finish line.

Five themes for youth-led projects

Every proposal must fit within one of five themes aligned with the city’s climate goals:

Powering our clean energy future

Projects that help communities learn about, access and adopt clean-energy and energy-saving solutions — for example, energy-efficiency education, youth clean energy ambassador programs or community solar storytelling projects.

Moving cleaner and greener

Initiatives that make sustainable transport easier, safer and more accessible — such as community cycling competitions, neighborhood mobility audits or bike workshops.

Creating cool and healthy communities

Projects that make neighborhoods healthier, safer and more resilient to climate impacts — from misting stations and beach cleanups to community gardens.

Advancing climate and environmental justice

Work that addresses the environmental risks and burdens many neighborhoods face — such as pollution and air-quality monitoring, murals depicting Chicago’s environmental justice history or neighborhood action guides.

Championing a circular city

Ideas that reduce waste, encourage reuse and keep materials in use and out of landfills — like food-waste reduction challenges, apartment recycling ambassadors or art installations made from reused materials.

Key dates and information sessions

The official timeline gives applicants a clear schedule:

  • 6 November 2026 — applications due
  • 7 December 2026 — selected grantees notified
  • 14 December 2026 — funding distributed
  • 15 April 2027 — deadline to complete projects

The city is also running three information sessions in October — on the 13th, 20th and 27th — to help young people and sponsoring organizations prepare applications.

Part of a global youth climate movement

Chicago’s fund joins Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Youth Climate Action Fund, which is expanding to up to 300 city halls worldwide. Bloomberg Philanthropies says participating cities each receive $50,000 plus technical assistance to run open innovation competitions for young people aged 15 to 24.

According to Bloomberg Philanthropies, the first round supported 100 municipalities working with more than 100,000 young residents, producing 250 green spaces, 118 composting stations, more than 150,000 planted trees and native plants, 3,000 community gardens and over 325,000 pounds of collected trash and recyclables. Other cities launching their own calls this month include Washington, D.C. and Setúbal in Portugal.

The expansion shifts young people from being guests at the climate table to designers and implementers of local solutions — a move from consultation to genuine youth leadership in city climate policy.
