Lockerbie Bombing Trial Postponed Amid New Evidence

The trial of Abu Agila Mohammad Kheir Al-Marimi, a Libyan man accused of involvement in the Lockerbie bombing, has been postponed for a third time due to newly discovered evidence. Jury selection was set to begin in Washington DC on Wednesday, but a new start date has been scheduled for January next year.

The postponement comes after lawyers for Al-Marimi revealed that new evidence, previously unknown to both the defence and prosecutors, emerged on August 21. Al-Marimi has denied building the bomb that destroyed Pan Am Flight 103 on December 21, 1988, killing 270 people.

• The trial was originally due to start in May 2025 but was postponed due to the complexity of the case and Al-Marimi’s ill health.
• A second scheduled start date in April this year was also called off after the defence requested more time to prepare.

Lockerbie Investigation Team Response

Laura Buchan, head of the Lockerbie investigation team at the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, stated: “I recognise that this adjournment will be disappointing for the families and for those who have followed this case over many years.”

Al-Marimi’s Defence Team

Lawyers acting for Al-Marimi said: “Constitutional and ethical obligations require the defence to investigate this development.” They met with Al-Marimi on Sunday, and he agreed to request the postponement.

US Government and Scottish Authorities Collaboration

The trial judge, Dabney Friedrich, has agreed to the postponement, highlighting the potential importance of the new evidence. Scottish prosecutors and police officers remain involved in the case, which is being led by the United States authorities.
