Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal has offered himself for accountability over the deadly fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims), vowing that no one responsible for the deaths of newborns would be spared.

The fire, which broke out in the gynaecology ward of the Pims hospital, resulted in the deaths of at least 14 infants, sparking widespread criticism and outrage across the country.

  • A high-powered inquiry committee has been constituted to investigate the incident.
  • The hospital’s infrastructure, dating back to 1984, was deemed unsuitable for sprinkler installation.

The minister stated that ‘accountability should start with me’, and that no one under his authority should be protected if they were found responsible for negligence or wrongdoing.

Kamal also addressed questions over a gate that had reportedly been closed, stating that it had been secured after three newborn babies were stolen from PIMS around three years earlier.

‘No one responsible will be spared’, Kamal vowed, adding that the inquiry committee would determine responsibility and establish the facts surrounding the incident.

Islamabad Hospital Fire Safety Arrangements

Kamal responded to questions about Pims’ fire-safety infrastructure, stating that sprinklers had not been installed due to the building’s technical unsuitability.
