The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a groundbreaking treatment for pancreatic cancer, daraxonrasib, which has shown to nearly double the overall survival time for patients in clinical trials. The drug, sold under the brand name Rasonque, is a daily pill that helps prevent the spread of cancer by targeting the mutated KRAS gene. This approval marks a significant breakthrough in treating one of the world’s deadliest cancers.

According to the FDA, the drug provides a critical new option for patients facing an extraordinarily difficult and historically hard-to-treat cancer. The American Cancer Society reports that roughly 67,000 people in the US are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer each year, with the highest mortality rate of all major cancers. More than half of those diagnosed die within three months.

  • Daraxonrasib has been shown to increase average survival time to 13.2 months, compared to 6.6 months for those on chemotherapy.
  • The drug targets the mutated KRAS gene, which is present in over 90% of pancreatic tumors and drives cancer growth.
  • The FDA granted the drug a Breakthrough Therapy designation in 2025, expediting its review due to its potential to address a significant unmet need.
  • Former US Senator Ben Sasse, diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer, is participating in a clinical trial for the drug and has reported that it has helped shrink his tumors.
