NiMet AfriGEO klimapris — satellitbillede af Afrika

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has received the AfriGEO Weather, Climate and Early Warning Services Award, one of the continent’s leading recognitions for climate resilience work, in honour of its use of weather, climate and Earth-observation data to strengthen early warning systems and protect communities from extreme weather.

Award presented in Abuja

The award was presented to NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Anosike, by the Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Prof. Matthew Olumide Adepoju, at the 10th AfriGEO Gala Dinner in Abuja on 7 October 2026. The ceremony was a highlight of the 10th AfriGEO Symposium, according to reports.

Why NiMet stood out

NiMet was recognised for its role in using weather, climate and Earth-observation information to improve early warning systems, strengthen climate resilience and support efforts to prepare Nigeria for the effects of extreme weather. Satellite data and ground-based monitoring feed decisions across disaster preparedness, agriculture, aviation and other climate-sensitive sectors.

Earth observations for a resilient Africa

The 2026 AfriGEO Symposium was held under the theme “Earth Observations for a Resilient Africa”, bringing together policymakers, scientists, development partners and private-sector representatives from 33 African member states. Described as the continent’s premier platform for geospatial information and environmental intelligence, the event focused on how satellite data can help African countries address climate-related challenges and promote sustainable development.

The award comes amid growing efforts across Africa to strengthen climate preparedness and improve access to reliable environmental information as countries contend with changing weather patterns. Follow Watan News’ ongoing climate news coverage for more stories on the continent’s climate action.
