A tragic incident occurred in northern France, where a car crashed into a crowd near a train station in Caen, resulting in at least one death and 10 injuries, according to police reports.

The incident took place near a bar, where a fight had broken out before the car crash, with local media reporting that the vehicle deliberately drove into pedestrians in the street opposite the train station.

  • Seven of those injured are in critical condition, while three have minor injuries
  • A 26-year-old male suspect, born in Russia, was arrested 20km away in Ouistreham
  • The suspect was not previously known to intelligence services, only for traffic offenses

Caen Train Station Incident

Local prefect David Claviere stated that the car deliberately drove into pedestrians, and the investigation is ongoing, with detectives from Caen’s Specialised Crime Division leading the probe.

Authorities have launched a major emergency response, with a large area cordoned off near the train station, and locals have been advised to avoid the area.

Bruno Coutanceau’s Statement

“For the moment, we are not dealing with a terrorist motive, but the investigation is only just beginning,” said Bruno Coutanceau, a top security official for Caen, adding that all victims appeared to be men between the ages of 17 and 40.

Normandy Region Response

The incident has sparked a significant response from local authorities, with social media videos showing crowds gathering around police cars and ambulances, and a spokesperson for the local administration of Calvados confirming that some of those injured are receiving treatment in a nearby hospital.
