Convicted Bosnian Serb war criminal Ratko Mladić has died in a UN prison at The Hague aged 84, marking the end of a life marked by genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity during the wars in the former Yugoslavia in 1992-95.

Mladić was jailed for life in 2017 for his role in the Bosnian war, including the siege of Sarajevo and the massacre of 8,000 men and boys at Srebrenica, and his sentence was upheld on appeal in 2021.

  • Mladić commanded Bosnian Serb forces in the 1990s against the Bosnian Croat and Bosniak armies.
  • His troops committed ethnic cleansing in Bosnia-Herzegovina, besieged the main city of Sarajevo, and carried out the massacre at Srebrenica.
  • Mladić went on the run for 16 years until he was finally tracked down in rural Serbia in 2011 and put on trial in the Dutch city.
  • A UN court at The Hague rejected a bid for his release from jail as he was nearing the end of his life, ruling that he was receiving comprehensive and compassionate treatment in prison.

The Hague Tribunal and Mladić’s Trial

Mladić was held at The Hague detention facility since 2011, and his trial was a significant moment in the pursuit of justice for the victims of the Bosnian war.

The sentence for the man known as the Butcher of Bosnia was a testament to the international community’s commitment to holding accountable those responsible for heinous crimes.

Hasan Hasanović’s Statement

“Mladić’s death does not bring closure because the people who were killed in Srebrenica cannot come back”, said Hasan Hasanović, a Srebrenica survivor who lost his twin brother and father in the massacre.

Reactions in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia

In Serbia’s capital Belgrade, the reaction from some residents has been markedly different, with some expressing support for Mladić and viewing his conviction as an injustice.

In contrast, many in Bosnia-Herzegovina see Mladić’s death as a reminder of the ongoing legacy of genocide and division in the region, and a call to continue working towards justice and reconciliation.
