Tate Brothers

Andrew and Tristan Tate, the dual British-US citizens and social media influencers, have told a Florida court that they should be released from jail so they can fight extradition to the UK on charges of rape and trafficking. The brothers, who were arrested in Miami on 19 July, maintained they did not commit the alleged crimes as they hit out at conditions in US custody.

The Tate brothers, wearing tan jail uniforms, appeared in court in shackles and were questioned in turn by their defence attorneys and government lawyers as they took the stand. Andrew Tate, 39, declared ‘I have never committed the crimes I’m accused of’, while Tristan Tate, 38, described his detention conditions as ‘small and hot, with little sunlight and exercise’.

  • The Tate brothers are facing a total of 59 criminal charges in the UK, including rape and counts relating to sex trafficking and indecent images of a child.
  • US Magistrate Judge Lauren Louis will issue a written ruling at a later date on whether to grant bail to the brothers.
  • The British authorities have until 16 September to submit a full extradition request.
  • The defence attorneys argued that the brothers’ high profile would make it almost impossible for them to flee, while government lawyers claimed they were a flight risk and had bragged about having multiple passports.

Florida Court Hearing

During the hearing, defence lawyers said the pair had complied with the terms of their release while they battled the UK charges and another case in Romania. US authorities took the men into custody last month after the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) unveiled dozens of new charges against them.

Andrew Tate, a former professional kickboxer, testified that to support himself financially, he had to go back to the boxing ring against ‘heavier, younger opponents’, according to CBS News. He also denied being a human trafficker, saying ‘I’ve said some stupid things, but sometimes you have to shake the internet to get noticed’.

Natasha Sesay’s Testimony

The defence also called Natasha Sesay, from England, to testify in support of releasing Andrew Tate. She described a five-year romantic relationship, saying she had had one child with him and was expecting a second. Sesay also said that despite his online persona, Andrew Tate ‘has never ever been violent toward women’, according to CBS.

US Jail Conditions

Tristan Tate described his detention conditions as ‘death by scurvy’, saying he had lost 14lb (6.3kg) due to the lack of sunlight and exercise. The British Embassy filed court documents asking the judge to keep the Tates in custody as the UK pursues extradition.

US government lawyers pushed back against the brothers’ claims that they had exaggerated their wealth to massage their online personas. The federal attorneys said the Tates had access to resources that could help fund an escape and they had bragged about having multiple passports.

Extradition Proceedings

The Tate brothers’ extradition case is ongoing, with the British authorities having until 16 September to submit a full extradition request. The brothers’ high profile and the seriousness of the charges against them have sparked widespread media attention and public interest.
