The Prophet's Mosque in Medina — the holy city over which the Saudi-led coalition says it intercepted a Medina cruise missile

The Saudi-led military coalition said on Thursday that its air defenses intercepted and destroyed a cruise missile over Medina province, home to Islam’s second-holiest city, as the Houthi movement pressed a wave of strikes against Saudi Arabia. The Medina cruise missile interception marks a sharp escalation in the conflict, with the Houthis swiftly denying any role in the attack.

FAKTA

  • What: Saudi-led coalition says it intercepted and destroyed a cruise missile over Medina province; separately destroyed a drone over Eastern Province.
  • When: Thursday, October 15, 2026.
  • Where: Medina province, Saudi Arabia — home to Islam’s second-holiest city; Eastern Province; and Aden, Yemen.
  • Claims: The coalition notably did not assign blame; Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree denied involvement and called the claim “a great and immense falsehood.”
  • Related: Houthis claimed missile and drone strikes near Yemen’s government palace in Aden; an official said at least two people were killed and six wounded.

Medina cruise missile: what the coalition said

Turki al-Malki, spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition and for the Saudi Defense Ministry, said on X that coalition forces had intercepted and destroyed a cruise missile in the Medina region. He gave few details, did not say who launched it, and did not name a precise target — the statement suggests the Medina area was either a potential target or lay along the missile’s flight path.

Earlier on Thursday, Saudi Arabia also said it had destroyed a drone over Eastern Province, a major oil-producing region.

Houthis deny involvement

The Houthi military spokesman, Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree, denied that the group had carried out the attack. He said the Houthis had conducted no strike operations targeting Saudi territory that day and called the Saudi claim about Medina “a great and immense falsehood.”

The group has previously pledged not to attack airports in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. Medina is where the Prophet Muhammad established the Muslim community, and it ranks second only to Mecca among Islamic holy sites, drawing millions of pilgrims each year.

Aden strikes and wider escalation

On the same day, Houthi-launched missiles and drones struck near the palace used by Yemen’s internationally recognized government in the port city of Aden, according to a government official, who said at least two people were killed and six others were wounded. The Houthis quickly claimed responsibility. Government leaders present in Aden were reported safe.

The Houthis have claimed responsibility for repeated missile strikes on civilian airports and oil facilities elsewhere in Saudi Arabia, with Saree saying one missile scored a “precise and direct hit” on the airport in Riyadh. The group has warned that Saudi airspace is unsafe for all airlines and has promised further strikes on oil facilities and airports “deep inside Saudi Arabia.”

Riyadh’s international airport has suspended service because of Houthi attacks, and dozens of flights were canceled or delayed at Jeddah airport, according to Flightradar24. France’s government advised its citizens on Wednesday against using King Khalid International Airport, airports in Jeddah and Dammam, and urged against travel to Riyadh, Jeddah or Dammam “unless necessary.”

Background to the conflict

The latest conflict between the Saudis and the Houthis began last month after the rebels seized key areas along the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical waterway for oil shipments at the southern end of the Red Sea off Yemen. The Saudi-led coalition, backing forces aligned with Yemen’s internationally recognized government, has been trying to retake them.

The coalition released footage on Thursday documenting roughly 20 drone and missile attacks the Houthis launched against King Khalid Airport in Riyadh between October 1 and 11.

Conclusion

The interception over Medina brings the fighting closer than ever to Islam’s holiest sites, even as both sides give conflicting accounts of what happened. With the Houthis vowing deeper strikes inside Saudi Arabia and Riyadh’s airport shut, the confrontation shows no sign of easing.
