Container ship GFS Pride at port before it sank after striking a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz

A container ship has sunk in waters south of the Strait of Hormuz after striking a naval mine, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps navy said on Wednesday, October 14. Maritime security sources identified the vessel as the Singapore-flagged GFS Pride, a container ship with a capacity of 2,824 twenty-foot containers. The sinking is the second reported loss of a commercial vessel since the United States-Iran war began in February.

FAKTA

  • What: The Singapore-flagged container ship GFS Pride sank after hitting a naval mine near the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard navy and maritime security sources.
  • When: Wednesday morning, October 14, 2026 — the vessel caught fire and sank early in the day.
  • Where: Waters south of the Strait of Hormuz, the chokepoint through which around one-fifth of the world’s oil normally passes.
  • Cargo: More than 2,500 containers; Iran warned local boats and fishermen to exercise caution because of containers floating in the water.
  • Crew: The fate of the crew was not immediately clear; Iran’s statement gave few details and there was no immediate independent verification.

What happened

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps navy said the ship was attempting to transit what it described as an “unauthorized and dangerous route” when it struck the naval mine, which exploded and started a fire. State television aired images of the vessel tilting into the water with a thick plume of smoke rising from it.

Maritime security sources told Reuters that the vessel was the GFS Pride, a Singapore-flagged container ship managed from the United Arab Emirates. Pakistan’s hydrographer issued a navigational warning to shipping dated October 14 stating that the “commercial vessel GFS Pride reported sunk with floating containers” and cautioning mariners in the area. The vessel’s manager, GFS Ship Management, could not be immediately reached for comment.

It was the first time Iran has reported a ship sinking after hitting a mine during the war, and there was no report of the incident from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations monitor, which normally tracks threats to shipping in the region.

A second vessel reported sinking

In a separate incident, the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged dry bulk carrier Cape Dao, which was struck by a projectile on September 23, is now also reported to be sinking after an unsuccessful rescue attempt, according to a note from the British maritime risk management group Vanguard. The two losses make the GFS Pride the second vessel to sink since the conflict began, based on data from the United Nations’ International Maritime Organization.

Escalation in the Strait

The sinking comes amid a sharp escalation around the strait. Two senior Iranian officials told Reuters that Iran is deploying new tactics to target ships sailing through the passage, seeking to keep oil prices high and to influence the United States midterm elections. According to their account, Tehran intends to expand the geographical scope of its operations beyond the Strait of Hormuz into the Gulf of Oman and waters further afield.

Maritime security analysis suggests the pattern is already changing: at least five incidents involving commercial ships were recorded around Hormuz in the past 48 hours, with operations extending toward the Gulf of Oman and waters off Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. A United States military official said Iran is also using unarmed spotters in small boats to track vessels after much of its radar capability was destroyed.

On Tuesday, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard navy reiterated that it maintains control over the Strait of Hormuz and warned it was prepared to sink any United States warship approaching the area. The United States Central Command pushed back, saying American forces and regional partners control the strait and that United States forces helped Gulf partners transit more than 19 million barrels of crude through the waterway on Tuesday.

Iran has repeatedly warned ships against trying to transit the strait without its approval, while the United States military has been guiding vessels through on a route off the coast of Oman on the far side of the waterway. More Middle East coverage is available on the Middle East news page.
