Social Security COLA 2027 featured image

Millions of older Americans, people with disabilities and survivors will receive more in their monthly payments next year. The Social Security Administration announced on 14 October 2026 that benefits will rise by 3.6 percent in 2027 — the largest cost-of-living adjustment since 2023 — lifting the average retirement payment by about $75 a month to an estimated $2,170 from January.

FAKTA

  • Adjustment: 3.6 percent cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027, against 2.8 percent for 2026.
  • Who: nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries from January 2027.
  • Supplemental Security Income: about 7.3 million SSI recipients from 31 December 2026, because 1 January 2027 is a federal holiday.
  • Average gains: about $75 a month for the average retired worker; about $59 a month for disability and survivor beneficiaries.
  • How it is set: by comparing the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) for July, August and September with the same months a year earlier.
  • Inflation context: consumer prices rose 3.7 percent in September 2026 compared with a year earlier.

Social Security COLA 2027: what changes, and when

The adjustment is automatic and annual. It is designed to protect the purchasing power of benefits as prices rise, by tracking third-quarter CPI-W inflation. The 3.6 percent figure is 0.8 percentage points higher than last year’s increase and 0.9 percentage points above what Social Security Trustees recently projected, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, as cited by CPA Practice Advisor.

People with a personal my Social Security account can view their COLA notice online from late November 2026, ahead of the paper letter. Individual amounts will vary with each person’s own benefit and deductions, including any Medicare Part B premium taken from the payment.

Why many recipients say it still falls short

Advocacy groups caution that the headline rise does not settle the household budget. AARP’s chief executive, Myechia Minter-Jordan, said one in five older Americans has no retirement savings and more people feel financially insecure this year than last, adding that the adjustment helps millions keep up with groceries, routine bills, health care and everyday expenses.

An AARP survey of 1,023 adults aged 50 and over in September found that only 23 percent felt a COLA of around 3.5 percent keeps up with rising prices. Critics of the formula argue that retirees spend a larger share on health care and housing than the CPI-W basket reflects, so their personal inflation runs higher. The Senior Citizens League has estimated that benefits have lost about 13.7 percent of purchasing power over the past decade.

Higher Medicare Part B premiums will also absorb part of the rise for many. The monthly premium is expected to rise to $209.50 in 2027, an increase of $6.60, according to Medicare’s most recent trustees report as cited by NBC Palm Springs — an expected figure, with the official premium still to be announced.

Conclusion

For nearly 72 million people, January brings the biggest Social Security rise in four years. Whether it feels like one will depend on the costs each household actually faces — food, housing, health care and energy — and on the Medicare deduction that arrives with it. Checking the COLA notice when it lands in late November is the practical first step.
