Ankara, 27 October 2026: Türkiye’s installed renewable power capacity passed 80 gigawatts at the end of September 2026, reaching 80,315 megawatts and accounting for 63.1 percent of the country’s total electricity capacity, according to figures from the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry announced on 25 October.

Total installed electricity capacity stood at 127,355 megawatts. Renewables also generated 56.9 percent of Türkiye’s electricity in September, the ministry said, a share of actual generation lower than their share of capacity, reflecting differences in how intensively plants run.

Solar and wind lead the growth

Solar installations reached 28,222 megawatts at the end of September, or 22.2 percent of total capacity, while wind power stood at 15,540 megawatts, or 12.2 percent. Together, solar and wind accounted for 43,762 megawatts, 34.4 percent of the national total.

Hydropower remained Türkiye’s largest single source of installed capacity at 32,332 megawatts. Natural gas followed solar at 25,009 megawatts, with domestic coal at 11,565 megawatts and imported coal at 10,466 megawatts. Biomass and geothermal capacity stood at 2,423 and 1,798 megawatts respectively.

September added 413 megawatts of renewables

Compared with August, the electricity system added a net 411 megawatts of generating capacity, while renewable capacity rose by 413 megawatts, from 79,902 to 80,315 megawatts.

Monthly electricity generation amounted to 31.79 billion kilowatt-hours in September, according to ministry data. Hydropower produced 8.27 billion kilowatt-hours, about 26 percent of total production, remaining the largest generation source for the month.

The ministry also said Türkiye met 70.3 percent of its electricity production needs from domestic resources in September, reducing dependence on foreign sources for electricity generation to below 30 percent. Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said the country would further expand capacity while turning domestic and renewable resources into an instrument of economic development.

Why it matters before COP31

Türkiye hosts the COP31 climate conference in Antalya in November 2026, and its energy transition is under close international scrutiny. The minister has previously announced an aim to raise installed renewable capacity to 120 gigawatts by 2035, and a deputy energy minister told an Ankara energy conference on 20 October that Türkiye plans about 80 billion dollars of investment in power transmission and distribution infrastructure by 2035 to carry growing volumes of clean power.

Capacity alone does not cut emissions: what matters next is how much clean electricity is actually generated, how grids and storage keep pace, and whether fossil capacity shrinks as renewables grow. September’s figures show renewables now dominate new capacity, but coal still holds more than 22,000 megawatts of installed capacity, so the pace of retirement and replacement will shape the emissions path.
