Dnipro railway station platform in Ukraine

Thirteen people were killed on Thursday when a Russian drone struck a crowded platform at the main railway station in Dnipro, Ukraine, as passengers waited to board a commuter train. At least five other people were wounded in the attack, which hit one of the busiest public places in the central-eastern Ukrainian city at a moment when travellers had gathered for departure.

FAKTA

  • Death toll: 13 people killed, at least five wounded
  • Location: Main railway station, Dnipro, central-eastern Ukraine
  • Date: Thursday, 29 October 2026
  • Weapon: A jet-powered drone, according to Ukraine’s state railway company
  • Target: A platform where a commuter train was preparing to depart for Zaporizhzhia
  • Confirmed by: Regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha and Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov

What happened at the station

Ukraine’s state railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia, said the drone hit a platform where passengers were preparing to board a train bound for Zaporizhzhia, a city in southern Ukraine. The platform was crowded at the time, and the explosion killed people who were waiting for their train.

The company said people were still on the platform despite a warning of heightened danger. Rescue teams reached the scene soon after the strike and began helping the wounded, while emergency workers continued to assess the damage and the full number of casualties.

Regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha said in a post on Telegram that at least five more people were wounded. Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov also reported a large number of casualties, writing that many people had been killed and many others injured.

A transport hub under strain

Dnipro is a major city in central-eastern Ukraine, and its main railway station remains an important hub for daily travel and movement across the country during the war. Stations of this kind carry commuters, families and workers every day, which is why an attack on a platform raises fresh concern about civilian safety at public transport facilities.

Officials had not released further details about the victims in the initial reports, and no information was immediately available about where the drone was launched from. Authorities said more information would follow as emergency work continued and the circumstances of the strike were examined.

The strike adds to the civilian toll of a war in which railway stations, markets and other crowded places have repeatedly been exposed to danger. For the families of those killed in Dnipro, Thursday’s attack turned an ordinary journey into a tragedy, and for the city it left a transport hub disrupted and a community in mourning.
