Saudi Arabia’s air defences intercepted and destroyed a drone in the Makkah region on Friday morning, the Saudi-led coalition said, in an incident that drew an immediate denial from Yemen’s Houthi movement. The Houthi drone Mecca report comes after a night of interceptions over Riyadh, and the two sides disagree sharply about what happened.

FAKTA

  • What: the Saudi-led coalition says its air defences intercepted and destroyed a drone in the Makkah region on Friday, 30 October 2026, before it could enter restricted airspace.
  • Who reported it: coalition spokesman Major General Turki al-Maliki, in a statement reported by the Saudi Press Agency.
  • The denial: Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said on X that the group carried out no operation towards Saudi territory on Friday and dismissed the coalition’s account as false.
  • Casualties or damage: none reported in connection with the drone intercepted in the Makkah region.
  • Thursday evening: two ballistic missiles aimed at Riyadh were intercepted; falling debris slightly injured one citizen and damaged a house and a vehicle, Saudi Civil Defense said.
  • Earlier incident: a similar drone was reported south of Mecca in mid-September, making this the second such reported incident in about six weeks.

Houthi Drone Mecca Incident: What the Coalition Reported

According to the coalition, the drone was launched by Yemen’s Houthi movement and was stopped in the Makkah region. The coalition said the aircraft was destroyed before it entered the restricted airspace around Mecca, Islam’s holiest city, which draws millions of pilgrims each year.

The coalition did not say what the drone was aimed at, and it did not report any casualties or damage from the interception itself. It said its defences remained on alert and warned that it would respond to further cross-border attacks.

Houthis Deny Targeting the Holy City

The Houthis rejected the coalition’s account. Saree said in a post on X that the group had not carried out any operation towards Saudi territory on Friday, and said its operations target Saudi oil facilities and military bases.

The group has repeatedly denied targeting Mecca and Medina, Islam’s two holiest cities, and has rejected previous coalition accusations that it launched drones towards them. The Houthis control significant parts of western Yemen and are aligned with Iran.

A Night of Interceptions Over Riyadh

The Mecca-region interception followed a tense night over the Saudi capital. On Thursday evening, air defences intercepted two ballistic missiles launched towards Riyadh, the coalition said. Saudi Civil Defense said a citizen sustained minor injuries when debris from the intercepted missiles fell in Riyadh, and that the debris damaged a house and a vehicle.

A cruise missile was also intercepted and destroyed in the western region in the early hours of Friday, according to the coalition statement reported by the Saudi Press Agency.

Why the Claim Matters

Any reported drone near Mecca carries particular sensitivity because of the city’s religious significance, and because the two sides’ accounts directly contradict each other. The coalition presents the incident as part of a continuing series of cross-border attacks by the Iran-aligned Houthis on Saudi Arabia, targeting military installations, airports and energy infrastructure.

The Houthis, for their part, say their campaign targets Saudi oil and military sites, not the holy cities. The dispute over Friday’s drone therefore remains unresolved on the public record: one side reports an interception over the Makkah region, the other denies any attack took place.

The incident also comes amid heightened regional tension in the Gulf, with Houthi attacks on Saudi energy and transport infrastructure and Saudi interceptions reported repeatedly in recent weeks. No further details about the drone’s origin or flight path have been released.
