NEW YORK — Kolkata designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee stepped back onto the New York Fashion Week calendar in mid-September 2026 with “Bengal Byzantine Broadway,” a Spring/Summer 2027 runway that mixed everyday denim with museum-scale gold. The roughly 72-look show, staged at Spring Studios, also opened a multiyear collaboration with The Metropolitan Museum of Art: high jewellery inspired by the museum’s Byzantine holdings and made entirely in India, Surface magazine and India Today reported.

The return carries history. Mukherjee’s last major New York outing was “Snail” in 2006, an early statement about slow luxury. Nearly two decades later, the new collection traded bridal spectacle for clothes that read closer to a real wardrobe — jeans, crisp shirts, relaxed tailoring, cowboy hats and Western flashes — finished with handcraft and statement jewellery rather than layers of couture drama.

American supermodel Christy Turlington opened the show in denim, wearing the sculptural Pantokrator pendant necklace in 18- and 22-karat gold set with a colourful mix of gemstones, according to India Today. Front-row guests included Bollywood actor Rani Mukerji, long associated with the designer, while model Avanti Nagrath closed in a black saree cinched with Sabyasachi’s signature tiger belt.

The Met chapter is the art peg that lifts the story beyond a standard runway recap. In remarks published by Surface, Mukherjee described recognising a shared jewellery “language” in Byzantine objects — pieces that carried spiritual, ceremonial and economic weight at once — and said he did not want to copy history so much as let one history provoke another. Drawings begun in Calcutta moved through the brand’s karigars in cycles of making and remaking; the house has framed the engineering mix of antiqued 22-karat and polished 18-karat gold as “Industrial Baroque.”

Industry coverage, including JCK, said the first jewellery drop spans six Byzantine-derived pieces — earrings, cuffs and necklaces — conceived and handcrafted in India, with select pieces headed to Sabyasachi’s New York flagship and other boutiques. Against restrained clothes, oversized cuffs and pendants did the theatrical work Broadway implies.

For fashion watchers, the show’s argument is cultural rather than costume-driven: Bengal craft, Byzantine crossroads and New York contradiction sharing one runway. Whether the Met partnership becomes a lasting art-fashion franchise will play out over the multiyear plan; for one afternoon in September, denim and Byzantine gold made the case in the same stride.
