Jeffrey Archer, bestselling British novelist and former politician, dies aged 86

Jeffrey Archer dies aged 86 at his London home on Monday, his publisher HarperCollins announced, just one day before the publication of his final novel, Adam and Eve. The bestselling British novelist and former politician had spent the weekend signing books for fans and was scheduled to appear at events this week.

HarperCollins said Archer died “suddenly and peacefully at home … between writing sessions”. The announcement was carried by Reuters and the Associated Press, which both described a career that swung from the heights of literary fame to the lows of a perjury conviction that sent him to prison.

Jeffrey Archer dies a day before his final novel’s release

The timing of his death was as dramatic as his fiction. Archer had been promoting Adam and Eve, which he had told his editor from the very beginning would be his final novel. According to the Associated Press, the book follows a pair of biblically named characters born on the same day to different social classes — a deliberate echo of his 1979 blockbuster Kane & Abel.

On Sunday, just a day before his death, Archer had met and signed books for fans at London’s Leicester Square Theatre. He had been scheduled to speak at further events this week.

Kate Elton, HarperCollins’ UK chief executive and Archer’s editor, said: “We’re all devastated to have lost a writer who has brought joy to generations of readers — and a true friend.” She added that Archer had been “the master storyteller and an editor’s dream — phenomenally hard-working, utterly committed to completing draft after draft to get every word as perfect as possible.”

From parliament to prison and back

Archer first made headlines when he entered parliament in 1969 at the age of 29. A fraudulent investment scheme meant he did not stand for re-election in 1974, and he turned to writing to clear his debts. His debut novel, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less (1976), was said to have been inspired by his own brush with bankruptcy.

He remained a central figure in the Conservative Party, becoming a close confidant of Margaret Thatcher and serving as the party’s deputy chairman. In 1992 he was appointed a life peer by John Major, and he sat in the House of Lords for more than three decades until his retirement in 2024.

His political career was shattered in 2001, when he was convicted of perjury and perverting the course of justice over a 1987 libel case in which he had won a then-record £500,000 in damages from the Daily Star. He was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment and served two, writing A Prison Diary behind bars before returning to the Lords.

A farewell to one of Britain’s most read storytellers

Despite the scandal, Archer’s pacy thrillers kept their millions of readers, and he raised millions of pounds for charity. His death marks the end of one of the most remarkable — and controversial — careers in modern British public life.
