A devastating flood on the Nepal-Tibet border has killed at least 177 people, with scientists suspecting a collapsed glacier as the likely cause. Preliminary investigations point to a glacial collapse, which is when a glacier or part of a glacier disintegrates, rather than an earthquake-induced landslide as initially reported.

The US Geological Survey clarified that the disaster was caused by a glacial collapse, which registered a magnitude of 5.2, according to USGS data and scientists who have analysed the event. The impact of the collapsed glacier hitting the bottom of a valley was so powerful that it triggered a massive flood.

Langtang Lirung Glacier Collapse

Dr Simon Cook, a glacier expert with the University of Dundee, told the BBC that his team detected the collapse of the lower part of a glacier in Nepal near the Langtang Lirung peak. He estimated that the glacier collapsed in a northwesterly direction and then travelled westwards downstream.

The collapse of the glacier is believed to have triggered a massive flood that swept through the valley, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. The sheer wave of debris suggests that there could have been a landslide first, which then dammed the river and burst in one huge great flood.

Mike Searle’s Analysis

“The sheer wave of debris suggests there could have been a landslide first; the water built up, dammed the river, and then it burst in one huge great flood,” said Mike Searle, a professor of earth sciences at Oxford University. Searle pointed out that the topography of the area could have also exacerbated the flood, with incredibly steep valleys on both sides of the mountain funnelling the water at higher speeds.

Nepal-Tibet Border Floods

The flood has had a devastating impact on the local community, with many people still missing and hundreds of homes destroyed. The disaster has highlighted the issue of rapidly melting Himalayan ice, with scientists warning that such events could become more frequent in the future.
