Atmos BayWa renewable deal — wind turbines and solar panels at an Australian renewable energy site

Sydney: Australian renewable energy developer Atmos Renewables has bought nearly one gigawatt of wind and solar projects from European developer BayWa r.e., in one of the biggest clean-energy portfolio deals in Australia this year. The Atmos BayWa renewable deal, announced on 16 October 2026, lifts Atmos’s operating and in-construction capacity beyond two gigawatts and underlines a wave of consolidation sweeping the country’s clean-energy sector.

The acquisition hands Atmos two operating solar farms and the advanced Bullawah wind-and-battery project in New South Wales, plus a set of earlier-stage development projects. No purchase price was disclosed.

What the Atmos BayWa renewable deal covers

The portfolio includes the 106 MWp Yatpool Solar Farm in Victoria, which holds a long-term power purchase agreement with retailer Flow Power, and the 20 MWp Hughenden Solar Farm in Queensland, which sells its power to CS Energy. Atmos says the purchase takes its portfolio to 19 wind, solar and battery assets, placing it among Australia’s larger renewable energy owner-operators.

The centrepiece of the deal is Bullawah, an advanced wind-and-battery project about 40 kilometres south-east of Hay in the New South Wales Riverina. The project is designed for 141 wind turbines with a total capacity of up to 800 MW, paired with a 359 MW battery storage system. For now it holds access rights for a 262 MW wind component, along with planning approvals from New South Wales and grid access rights to the state’s new south-west Renewable Energy Zone.

Bullawah to be investment-ready in 2027

Atmos chief executive Nigel Baker said Bullawah had already passed important development milestones but that substantial work remained. “Our focus will be on progressing the project carefully through the remaining phases of planning and development, preparing the project to be investment-ready in 2027, while continuing to work openly with landowners, First Nations partners, local communities and government,” he said.

Baker said the wind farm had “the potential to add meaningful new generation and storage capacity in New South Wales while creating jobs, supporting business and delivering long-term benefits for communities across the Riverina”. It will be Atmos’s first wind farm in New South Wales.

Why BayWa is selling

BayWa r.e. flagged “far-reaching” restructuring measures in March 2026, citing what it called the “overall difficult market situation” for the renewable energy sector, and said it would focus on specific core markets in Europe. The sale of its Australian portfolio fits that retreat.

BayWa chief operating officer Dr Daniel Gäfke said the transaction highlighted the company’s expertise in “identifying, advancing and mitigating risk in large-scale renewable energy developments, delivering value for our partners whilst contributing to Australia’s energy transition”. Atmos said the two companies were working closely on a smooth handover, with existing power purchase agreements, landowner agreements and stakeholder commitments to be honoured.

A busy month for Atmos

The deal caps a busy period for Atmos. Earlier in October the company reached financial close on the 400 MW / 1,600 MWh Teebar battery in Queensland and the 470 MW Parron Maam Marang wind farm in Western Australia — described by industry media as the biggest wind project to lock in finance in Australia for more than two years. It is also building the Merredin battery in Western Australia.

Atmos’s existing portfolio includes the Hornsdale wind farms in South Australia, two wind farms in Tasmania, six wind farms and a solar farm in Victoria and four solar farms in Queensland. It bought the Karadoc solar farm in Victoria from BayWa in 2024.

FAKTA

  • Deal: Atmos Renewables acquires ~926 MW of operating and development-stage wind and solar projects from BayWa r.e.
  • Operating assets: Yatpool Solar Farm (106 MWp, Victoria); Hughenden Solar Farm (20 MWp, Queensland).
  • Development flagship: Bullawah wind farm (up to 800 MW, 141 turbines) with 359 MW battery storage in New South Wales; investment decision targeted for 2027.
  • Atmos scale after deal: 19 wind, solar and battery assets; more than 2 GW operating and in construction.
  • Seller motive: BayWa r.e. restructuring since March 2026; refocusing on European core markets.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly did Atmos Renewables buy?

Atmos bought a portfolio of about 926 MW from BayWa r.e., comprising the operating 106 MWp Yatpool solar farm in Victoria and the 20 MWp Hughenden solar farm in Queensland, plus the advanced Bullawah wind-and-battery project in New South Wales and several earlier-stage development projects.

Why is BayWa r.e. selling its Australian projects?

BayWa announced far-reaching restructuring measures in March 2026, pointing to a difficult overall market situation for renewables, and said it would concentrate on its core European markets. The Australian sale is part of that retreat.

How big is the Bullawah project?

Bullawah is planned for 141 wind turbines with up to 800 MW of wind capacity and a 359 MW battery storage system, south-east of Hay in New South Wales. It currently holds access rights for a 262 MW wind component; Atmos aims to make it investment-ready in 2027.

What else has Atmos done recently?

Earlier in October 2026 Atmos reached financial close on the 400 MW / 1,600 MWh Teebar battery in Queensland and the 470 MW Parron Maam Marang wind farm in Western Australia — reported as the largest Australian wind project to secure financing in more than two years — and it is building the Merredin battery in Western Australia.

Why does this deal matter for the energy transition?

The acquisition shows how renewable portfolios are consolidating: large, investment-ready wind-plus-storage projects inside dedicated renewable energy zones are attracting serious capital. With more than 2 GW of operating and in-construction capacity, Atmos is becoming one of the owner-operators shaping how fast Australia’s grid can absorb clean, dispatchable power.
