The European Union’s Education for Climate Coalition has opened registration for its flagship annual event, Education for Climate Day 2026, which will take place on 22 October 2026. This year’s edition, billed as the “Fair Green Future” event, puts intergenerational fairness and climate education at the centre of the agenda — asking how learning can help different generations take shared responsibility for a fair climate transition.

The event will be held in a hybrid format, and online participation is now open to educators, learners, researchers, policymakers and climate-education practitioners across Europe. It is the coalition’s biggest annual gathering, dedicated entirely to the question of how education can turn climate ambition into practical, everyday action.

What is on the programme

According to the published programme, the day will run from morning to late afternoon with sessions designed to mix policy with hands-on practice. A policy session sets the scene before the focus shifts to a pre-COP31 session on intergenerational lessons for future generations — linking classroom learning directly to the global climate negotiations that take place in Türkiye in November.

A Youth Climate Lab session will present action outlooks from young community members, while another session takes on misinformation and climate resilience, exploring how learners of all ages can build resistance to false climate claims. Citizenship education for a sustainable future and the EU’s GreenComp competence framework round out the day, before closing remarks.

FAKTA

  • Event: Education for Climate Day 2026, the Education for Climate Coalition’s annual flagship
  • Date: 22 October 2026 — hybrid format with online participation
  • Theme: “Fair Green Future” — intergenerational fairness and climate education
  • Key sessions: pre-COP31 intergenerational lessons, Youth Climate Lab, GreenComp, resilience in the world of misinformation
  • Annual Call: nine selected green-education projects will present in Brussels with a fully funded visit
  • Registration: now open for educators, learners, researchers and practitioners

Youth-led climate learning takes centre stage

Young people are not just an audience at this year’s event — they are among the main contributors. The 4th Youth Climate Lab, held online from 13 to 18 July 2026, brought together 25 young community members to tackle eco-anxiety and resilience in education. The group co-created an action package with six recommendations for teachers and trainers, plus two creative activities for secondary, vocational and higher education.

The package will be presented during Education for Climate Day 2026, with two Youth Climate Lab representatives sharing the outcomes with the wider community. Its message is practical: education can help young people move from climate worry to meaningful action.

Winning projects get a fully funded trip to Brussels

The day’s agenda also features the results of the coalition’s Annual Call for Innovative Green Education Action Projects 2026. The call, which closed on 6 September, invited practical, participatory climate-education projects across the European Education Area under three themes: youth leadership and intergenerational dialogue for climate action; citizenship education and institutional action for sustainability; and GreenComp — envisioning sustainable futures in teaching and learning.

Nine projects in total — three per theme — have been selected. Their representatives will be brought to Brussels for a fully funded visit to present their work during Education for Climate Day and exchange experience with climate-education stakeholders from across Europe.

The coalition’s community bulletin also notes a new job-mentoring pilot in sustainability education running from October 2026 to April 2027, connecting mentors and mentees across generations — another sign that the intergenerational theme runs through the coalition’s whole 2026 work plan.

Conclusion

With less than a month to go before COP31 in Türkiye, the EU’s Education for Climate Day 2026 frames learning itself as a climate solution: fair, shared, and built on dialogue between generations. Registration is open now, and the sessions are free to join online.
