Navi Pillay 2026 Nobel Peace Prize — gold medal and scales of justice with Oslo City Hall

OSLO: The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to South African jurist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay for her efforts to promote peace and international law, the committee announced on Friday.

The decision was announced by committee chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes at 11:00 CEST at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo. The committee said Pillay, with “exceptional courage and integrity”, had led the way towards a more comprehensive global legal order and had been instrumental in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted.

A lifetime in the service of international law

Born on 23 September 1941 into a family of Indian Tamil origin in Durban, South Africa, Navi Pillay grew up under apartheid and became a lawyer and legal pioneer, confronting deep structural discrimination and segregation. Her early work included defending anti-apartheid activists, among them Nelson Mandela.

In 1995 she became the first non-white woman judge of the High Court of South Africa. The same year she was elected a judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), where she served for eight years — the last four as president (1999–2003). Her tenure is best remembered for the landmark trial of Jean-Paul Akayesu, which established that rape and sexual violence could constitute crimes against humanity and acts of genocide — a breakthrough that reshaped international humanitarian law.

In 2003 Pillay was elected to the first panel of judges of the International Criminal Court, serving in its Appeals Division until 2008. That year she was appointed United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, a post she held until 2014.

Until recently she chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory. She now serves as an ad hoc judge of the International Court of Justice in the case in which Myanmar stands accused of genocide. In 2025 she received the Sydney Peace Prize.

“Peace requires justice”

Awarding this year’s prize, the committee said it wanted to remind the world that the rule of law — national and international — underpins the system set up to ensure peace and resolve conflicts without violence: “Peace requires justice.”

The committee noted that at a time when international law and its institutions are under tremendous pressure, Pillay’s independence, expertise and steadfastness have made her one of the most respected international jurists of our time.

The prize will be formally presented on 10 December in Oslo City Hall, on the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
