Real Madrid Tebas resignation — packed football stadium at night under floodlights

Real Madrid have demanded the immediate resignation of LaLiga president Javier Tebas after he compared the Spanish club’s communication methods to the propaganda techniques of Nazi Germany, in the most serious escalation yet of one of football’s bitterest institutional feuds. The Real Madrid Tebas resignation demand was issued in an official club statement on Friday, 16 October 2026.

FAKTA

  • Who: Real Madrid vs LaLiga president Javier Tebas
  • What: The club has demanded Tebas step down immediately as LaLiga president and as vice-president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF)
  • When: Tebas made the remarks on social media on Friday morning; Real Madrid answered with its statement the same day
  • Why: Tebas compared Real Madrid TV and the club’s messaging to the propaganda methods of Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Germany’s propaganda minister
  • Background: Tebas, 64, has led LaLiga since 2013 and was re-elected unopposed in 2023 for a term running until 2027

What triggered the Real Madrid Tebas resignation demand

Tebas wrote on social media on Friday that Real Madrid’s directors were orchestrating a chorus of sympathetic voices, with the club-owned Real Madrid TV leading the way. He accused the channel of hand-picking refereeing incidents that suited the club’s grievances, repeating complaints, stoking suspicion and blaming its enemies.

He said this method recalled the propaganda mechanisms used by Goebbels. Tebas added that his comparison concerned propaganda techniques only, and was not aimed at Nazi ideology or at the club’s supporters.

He was reacting to articles by two journalists in the newspaper El Debate, who argued that Tebas and LaLiga were acting against Real Madrid’s interests. Tebas accused the journalists of amplifying a message on behalf of the club’s management.

Real Madrid responded the same day with a lengthy official statement. The club called the remarks intolerable and extraordinarily serious, and said they were incompatible with the responsibilities of a league president. It argued that Tebas had shown a repeated lack of neutrality, respect and impartiality, and that his comparison discredited the club, its leadership and its television channel.

Tebas stands by the comparison

Tebas has defended his post, saying his role requires him to defend the competition. He has also challenged the club’s complaints about fixture scheduling, and asked Real Madrid to publish all of its requests to change match dates and kick-off times, including the ones the league approved.

He maintained that Real Madrid TV repeatedly overlooks decisions that favour the club or harm other teams, presenting only the incidents that feed the club’s grievances.

No institutional response has yet come from the RFEF or UEFA, and the standoff now puts both organisations under pressure to take a position.

A feud years in the making

The latest row did not come out of nowhere. In September, Real Madrid had already called for a new LaLiga president after Tebas described the club’s complaints about refereeing as a smokescreen for shortcomings on the pitch.

The club has also approached UEFA seeking full clarification of the payments made over the years by Barcelona to the vice-president of the Technical Committee of Referees, the so-called Negreira case, and has called for a wide-ranging overhaul of Spanish football’s refereeing and governance structures.

The two sides have clashed for years over the failed Super League project, television rights deals and refereeing. More recent flashpoints include Vinícius Júnior’s red card and subsequent four-match ban, and a domestic fixture scheduled for 7 November, three days after a European trip to Athens.

On Saturday, former Real Madrid manager José Mourinho publicly condemned Tebas’s remarks, backing the club’s stance — a sign of how personal and far-reaching the dispute has become.

With both sides refusing to back down, Spanish football’s governance now faces an open crisis, and the next moves of LaLiga, the RFEF and UEFA will be watched across world football. Follow more football coverage in our English section.
