Philadelphia has named veteran climate activist and author Eileen Flanagan as its 2026 Climate Hero at the city’s ninth annual SustainPHL awards, honouring nine local people and organisations working for a cleaner, healthier city.
Green Philly, the independent media organisation behind the awards, hosted the ceremony on Thursday 29 October 2026 at the German Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. According to Green Philly, 27 individuals and organisations were nominated for this year’s awards, and the recipients were published on 2 November.

A night for the city’s changemakers
SustainPHL is Philadelphia’s annual sustainability awards celebration, known as the city’s “Green Oscars”. Green Philly says more than 270 changemakers have been honoured through the awards over the years. The 2026 ceremony ran from 6:30pm to 9:30pm and brought together business leaders, non-profit innovators, civic changemakers and residents.
The Climate Hero category honours nominees who are, in Green Philly’s words, “taking action on climate change and helping build a more resilient region”.
Climate Hero: Eileen Flanagan
Flanagan is a Philadelphia-based Quaker activist, facilitator and teacher whose publisher biography describes a forty-year commitment to justice and climate leadership. She chaired the board of the Earth Quaker Action Team from 2013 to 2018 and later served as the group’s campaign director in a grassroots campaign pressing Vanguard, the investment firm, for meaningful climate action.
She is the author of the memoir Renewable and of Common Ground, published in 2025, which tells stories of coalitions in the climate movement and the campaigns that brought people together across racial lines. Green Philly’s announcement names her as the 2026 Climate Hero but gives no further citation for the choice; her long record of organising is the public background to the honour.

Why local champions matter
The Philadelphia honours come just days before the world’s attention turns to Antalya, Türkiye, where the COP31 United Nations climate conference opens on 9 November and runs until 20 November 2026. While COP31 negotiators debate global targets, awards like SustainPHL highlight the neighbourhood-level work — community gardens, clean air advocacy, solar power and resilient streets — on which those targets ultimately depend.
