Patriot air defence system to Poland: Swedish launcher to guard NATO Ukraine aid hub

Sweden will send a Patriot air defence system to Poland in December, deploying around 100 military personnel to protect a key NATO logistics hub used for military and civilian support to Ukraine, the Swedish government announced on Tuesday.

FAKTA

  • What: Sweden will provide a Patriot air defence unit for NATO operations in Poland.
  • When: Deployment begins in December; the initial decision runs until the end of the year, with a plan to extend it by six months subject to parliament’s approval.
  • Where: The NATO logistics hub at Rzeszów-Jasionka airport in southeastern Poland.
  • Who: About 100 personnel, mainly from the air defence regiment in Halmstad, under NATO Air Command.
  • Replaces: The Dutch Patriot mission, which has protected the hub since last December.

Sweden’s Patriot deployment to Poland

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced the decision at a press conference on Tuesday, saying the Patriot system will protect NATO’s logistics hub in Poland and thereby ensure that important military and civilian materiel reaches Ukraine.

Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard said the contribution was vital in light of Russia’s recent attempts to undermine support for Ukraine, while Defence Minister Pål Jonson said the armed forces assessed the risks of the deployment as manageable and described it as part of NATO’s integrated air and missile defence.

Patriot air defence system to Poland guards Ukraine aid corridor

The Rzeszów-Jasionka hub coordinates the flow of military equipment to Ukraine, handling roughly 18,000 tonnes of material each month, according to NATO. Polish broadcaster TVN reported that around 90 percent of international aid for Ukraine passes through the hub.

The deployment marks the first time Sweden has sent its Patriot system on an official NATO task. It follows last week’s announcement that Swedish Gripen fighter jets would join NATO’s air-policing mission over Poland. Poland’s defence minister, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, thanked Sweden and the Netherlands for their role in defending Polish airspace and NATO’s eastern flank.
