HONOLULU, Hawaii — Young people across Hawaii are being invited to take over the State Capitol and turn their climate ideas into law. The Hawaiʻi Youth Climate Summit will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2026, bringing children, teens and young adults face to face with policymakers to pitch solutions for a healthier, safer and more affordable Hawaii.
The announcement, issued on October 13 by the Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources, opens the free summit to all young people, students and families.
What the youth climate summit will offer
The summit will run from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Hawaiʻi State Capitol Rotunda in Honolulu, with youth speeches beginning at noon. It is co-hosted by the Hawaiʻi State Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Commission (CCMAC) and the Climate Future Forum.
The event is free and open to the public. Organisers promise live local music, free lunch while supplies last, networking with environmental groups and eco-friendly prize giveaways for participants.
The programme is designed as more than a conversation. Participants will learn how the legislative process works, practice drafting legislative proposals and present their ideas directly to lawmakers — giving young people a working platform to turn shared concern into legislative solutions.
From youth ideas to real climate policy
The summit has a track record of turning youth perspectives into policy. Past participants co-authored a dedicated youth chapter in the Hawaiʻi Climate Action Pathways (HICAP) plan — the state’s strategy for a more resilient Hawaii.
“Young voices are essential to the climate movement because the decisions being made today directly define the world we inherit tomorrow,” a former summit participant said.
That link between youth voices and lawmaking reflects a broader shift in climate politics: young leaders across Asia and the Pacific have also drafted their own climate priorities ahead of COP31, showing how youth climate summits are feeding into the world’s biggest climate negotiations.
