Oil pumpjack in a field Chord Energy Michael Lou CEO

Chord Energy Corporation has appointed Michael Lou as its new president and chief executive officer, succeeding Daniel Brown, who stepped down from the role on 19 October 2026. The Houston-based oil and gas company announced the leadership change alongside preliminary third-quarter results that beat its production guidance.

FAKTA

  • New CEO: Michael Lou, 52, appointed president and chief executive officer and elected to the board, effective 19 October 2026.
  • Outgoing CEO: Daniel Brown, who notified the company on 16 October 2026 of his decision to resign, effective 19 October, to pursue another professional opportunity.
  • Severance: Brown resigned without Good Reason under the company’s Executive Severance Plan and will not receive severance-related payments, according to the filing.
  • Lou’s background: More than 25 years in oil and gas, including 17 years in leadership roles at Chord and its predecessor companies.
  • Previous roles: Executive vice president, chief strategy officer and chief commercial officer from March 2024 to October 2026; executive vice president and chief financial officer from July 2022 to March 2024.

An internal appointment

Lou is a longtime company executive rather than an outside hire. He most recently served as executive vice president, chief strategy officer and chief commercial officer, positions he held from March 2024 until his appointment as chief executive. Before that, he was executive vice president and chief financial officer from July 2022 to March 2024.

Before the merger of Whiting Petroleum and Oasis Petroleum that created Chord Energy, Lou held several senior executive positions at Oasis Petroleum and its subsidiaries, including chief financial officer and executive vice president, and president and director of the general partner of Oasis Midstream Partners. He began his career in investment banking, where he spent 10 years in roles focused on the energy sector.

Board backing

“Michael has been an instrumental member of the Chord leadership team and a key driver of our success,” said Susan Cunningham, chair of the Chord Energy board of directors. “He has helped profitably scale the business, and has led strategic and commercial initiatives while demonstrating strong business acumen and the ability to lead across the organization. His deep knowledge of Chord and his proven leadership make him well-suited to lead the Company. The Board has full confidence in Michael’s ability to build upon Chord’s momentum.”

Chord credited Lou with helping grow the organisation into the largest operator in the Williston Basin while maintaining a strong balance sheet. The company said it had not entered into any material new plan, contract or arrangement with Lou in connection with his appointment, and that his prior compensatory arrangements remain in effect.

Strong quarter behind the transition

The leadership change was disclosed alongside preliminary third-quarter 2026 results showing production volumes above the high end of guidance across oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids, with capital expenditures in line with guidance. The company also reported that it had repurchased $205 million of stock during the quarter and a further $44.3 million in the fourth quarter to date.

Chord ended September with $804.7 million in cash and $1.48 billion in debt, according to reported figures, and is planning a $550 million sale of non-operated Marcellus assets to add liquidity. Formal third-quarter results are scheduled for 4 November, with a conference call on 5 November expected to give more detail on realised prices, guidance and the Marcellus divestiture.

What to watch

Investors will now watch whether Lou maintains Chord’s production, capital-allocation and shareholder-return record as he moves from strategy and commercial leadership into the top job. The transition is deliberately low-drama: an internal successor, a clean handover date, and a quarter that beat expectations give the new chief executive a solid starting point.
