Bangladesh is facing a deepening dengue crisis, with health ministry figures showing 418 people have died from the mosquito-borne disease so far in 2026 and more than 133,000 patients admitted to hospitals up to October 30. October has emerged as the deadliest month of the year, recording 173 deaths and overtaking September, when 148 people died. Health specialists warn that the outbreak is unlikely to ease significantly before December, raising concern that hospitals will remain under strain through November.
The latest daily update from the Directorate General of Health Services recorded three more deaths and 1,262 new hospital admissions in the 24 hours to the morning of October 30. All three of the latest deaths were reported in Dhaka division, which also recorded the highest number of new admissions, with 435 patients. In total, 133,367 dengue cases have been reported in hospitals across the country this year, while 126,713 patients have recovered and been discharged. More than 6,200 patients were still receiving treatment at the time of the latest update.
FAKTA
- Deaths from dengue in Bangladesh in 2026: 418, as of October 30.
- Hospital admissions this year: more than 133,000, including 133,367 reported cases.
- Deadliest month: October, with 173 deaths, compared with 148 in September.
- Latest 24-hour figures: 3 deaths and 1,262 new admissions, all three deaths in Dhaka division.
- Patients still in treatment: more than 6,200.
- Expert outlook: transmission likely to continue through November, with significant improvement unlikely before December.
Hospitals under growing pressure
The pressure on hospitals is most visible in the capital. At the state-run Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital in Dhaka, 279 dengue patients were being treated after 67 new admissions in a single day, according to hospital director Mirza Golam Sarwar.
The pattern of the year shows how sharply the outbreak accelerated. From January to May, only five dengue deaths were recorded in total. The toll then rose through the summer, with 13 deaths in June, 36 in July and 43 in August, before climbing to 148 in September and 173 in October. The figures underline that the crisis built over months rather than arriving in a single surge, and that the final months of the year will be decisive for the overall toll.
Outlook for November and December
Entomologist Kabirul Bashar of Jahangirnagar University said deaths were unlikely to keep rising at October’s pace, but transmission would probably persist through November, with any decline likely to be modest.
Dengue is spread by Aedes mosquitoes, which breed in standing water. The 2026 outbreak remains well below the country’s worst year on record, 2023, when more than 321,000 hospital admissions and 1,705 deaths were recorded. Even so, the rising death toll this year has renewed attention on mosquito control, early treatment and hospital capacity as Bangladesh heads into November.
