Call to Earth Day 2026 Think Blue ocean campaign - schoolchildren joining a beach cleanup

More than one million participants — schools, individuals and organisations around the world — have signed up to take part in the sixth edition of CNN’s Call to Earth Day, taking place on Thursday 8 October 2026. This year’s theme, “Think Blue”, turns the global day of environmental action toward the ocean: the one force that connects every country, every coastline and every community on Earth.

FAKTA

  • What: CNN’s Call to Earth Day — the sixth edition of the network’s global day of action for the planet
  • When: 8 October 2026
  • Theme: “Think Blue” — protecting the ocean, from coral reefs to rivers and waterways
  • Participation: More than one million participants signed up so far — schools, organisations and individuals worldwide
  • Partner: Rolex Perpetual Planet Initiative
  • Broadcast: CNN International runs stories, live programming and interviews from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and both North and South America throughout the day, including a special edition of Connect the World with Becky Anderson and a CNN Creators episode on ‘super coral’ in the Red Sea near Saudi Arabia and students marking the day in Doha

Why “Think Blue”

According to the initiative, the ocean feeds billions of people, regulates the climate and produces much of the oxygen we breathe. Yet rising temperatures, overfishing and plastic pollution are stalling what the campaign calls the planet’s “blue engine”. The theme invites everyone — coastal communities and landlocked cities alike — to act for the waters that sustain them.

Call to Earth Day is part of Call to Earth, the CNN network initiative launched in 2019 in partnership with Rolex and its Perpetual Planet initiative, which spotlights people and projects working to safeguard the planet for future generations.

What participants can do

The campaign invites schools, organisations, families and individuals to take any action for the ocean, however small: organising a beach or river cleanup, creating ocean-themed artwork, reducing single-use plastics, restoring marine habitats, planting mangroves, teaching students about water conservation — or simply pledging to make more sustainable choices.

Schools at the centre

Education is a core pillar of the day. CNN’s International Commercial arm says thousands of educators are helping students turn environmental awareness into meaningful action — through classroom lessons on ocean conservation, recycling projects and student-led initiatives. CNN’s daily ten-minute student news show, CNN10, has run themed programming in the lead-up to the day in past editions.

Awareness as climate action

Environmental educators increasingly treat awareness days as a first step toward lasting behaviour change: a beach cleanup teaches where plastic waste comes from; a mangrove planting shows how coastal ecosystems buffer storms and store carbon. The “Think Blue” edition arrives weeks before COP31, where ocean and climate finance will be on the negotiating table — a reminder that public awareness and policy momentum move together.

Across Europe, the same week sees education take centre stage too: the European Commission’s Education for Climate Coalition holds its Education for Climate Day on 22 October 2026, with a pre-COP31 session on intergenerational lessons for future generations.

Conclusion

With more than a million participants already signed up, Call to Earth Day 2026 shows how far a simple idea can travel: one day, one theme, and an ocean of small actions. Whether “Think Blue” leaves a lasting mark will depend on what participants do on 9 October — the day after the cameras move on.
