Copenhagen autumn — Rosenborg Castle in Kongens Have

There is no better month to see Copenhagen than October. As the Copenhagen autumn reaches its peak in the first two weeks of the month, the Danish capital’s parks, waterfronts and palace gardens explode in shades of gold, amber and deep red — and with the summer crowds gone, the city is yours to photograph in soft Nordic light.

FAKTA: Copenhagen in autumn

  • Peak colours: First two weeks of October across Copenhagen’s parks and gardens
  • October weather: Highs around 12°C, lows around 6°C; roughly 14–15 rainy days in the month
  • Best spots: Kongens Have at Rosenborg Castle, Nyhavn, the Botanical Gardens, Kastellet fortress
  • Why now: Fewer tourists after mid-September, softer light, and full hygge season in the city’s cafés

Rosenborg Castle and Kongens Have

The King’s Garden around Rosenborg Castle is Copenhagen’s oldest royal garden — and in October, its tree-lined lanes turn into tunnels of gold. The 17th-century red-brick castle, framed by orange and yellow foliage with fallen leaves carpeting the paths, is the single most photographed autumn scene in the Danish capital.

Nyhavn in autumn light

Down at the harbour, the 17th-century waterfront of Nyhavn takes on a different character in autumn. The bright townhouses glow against the golden trees along the quay, old wooden ships rest in the canal, and the low October sun stretches long reflections across the water. Come early in the morning and you may have the quay almost to yourself.

Kastellet’s ramparts in red and gold

A short walk from Nyhavn, the 17th-century star fortress of Kastellet offers one of the city’s great autumn walks. Its grassy ramparts, planted with rows of chestnut and lime trees, turn deep red and gold in October. The circular path around the fortress is a favourite with local joggers and photographers alike — and it is completely free.

Copenhagen autumn: practical notes for your visit

October in Copenhagen means crisp air and changeable skies: pack layers, a warm jacket and something waterproof, because showers can arrive quickly. Daylight shrinks through the month, but that is part of the charm — the soft, low-angled light is exactly what makes autumn photography here so rewarding.

When the rain does come, the city compensates indoors: October is peak hygge season, when Copenhageners retreat to candlelit cafés and bakeries. Warm up with a coffee and a kanelsnegl, then head back out — the colours will be waiting. For opening hours and seasonal events, see the official Visit Copenhagen guide.
