Duane 'Keffe D' Davis in a Las Vegas courtroom, sentenced in the Tupac Shakur murder case

Duane “Keffe D” Davis was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison on Tuesday for orchestrating the 1996 murder of rap icon Tupac Shakur, closing one of the most famous unsolved cases in music history nearly three decades after the drive-by shooting near the Las Vegas Strip.

FAKTA

  • The sentence: 40 years to life — 20 years to life for first-degree murder plus a consecutive 20 years to life for the deadly-weapon enhancement, with credit for 731 days already served.
  • The court: Nevada District Court Judge Carli Kierny, Las Vegas.
  • The conviction: A jury found Davis guilty in August after less than three hours of deliberations.
  • The case: Davis, 63, is the only person ever charged in Shakur’s killing.
  • What is next: Defence lawyer Michael Sanft said Davis plans to appeal the verdict.

How Keffe D Was Sentenced in the Tupac Murder Case

Judge Carli Kierny imposed the sentence on Tuesday after prosecutors argued Davis deserved the maximum possible punishment. Prosecutor Marc DiGiacomo told the court that whatever sentence was imposed, Davis was “guaranteed to die” behind bars.

Shakur’s sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, was present in the courtroom as DiGiacomo addressed the judge. DiGiacomo argued that Davis had spent years profiting from the killing through interviews and a memoir, and said he did not deserve the minimum sentence.

Davis spoke only briefly before the sentence was handed down, asking Judge Kierny for the return of personal items police had taken from his home, including his photographs. Asked whether he had anything further to say, he replied: “No I’m good.”

A 30-Year Cold Case Cracked by the Defendant’s Own Words

Shakur, 25, was shot in a drive-by attack near the Las Vegas Strip on September 7, 1996, and died from his wounds six days later, at the height of his career as one of rap’s most influential voices.

The killing went unsolved for decades until Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, repeatedly described his role in interviews and in his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend. Prosecutors built much of their case around Davis’s own words, including police interviews and on-camera statements in which he placed himself in the passenger seat of the white Cadillac from which the fatal shots were fired. Davis has said his nephew, Orlando Anderson, fired the shots.

The defence challenged the case, arguing that Davis had fabricated his accounts and that there was insufficient proof placing him at the scene. Davis was arrested in September 2023 and has remained in custody since.

What Happens Next

Davis’s lawyer, Michael Sanft, said he plans to appeal the conviction, arguing that prosecutors waited too long to bring the case. For now, the sentence marks the end of a three-decade search for justice in a killing that shaped hip-hop history and spawned countless conspiracy theories.
