Khalistan referendum Edmonton: What Happened

More than 23,000 people cast votes at a Khalistan referendum Edmonton event on Sunday, according to organizers, who described it as one of the largest such votes held outside India.

The ballot was organized by Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), the advocacy group running the worldwide referendum campaign, with its general counsel Gurpatwant Singh Pannun overseeing the event. Organizers said the Punjab Referendum Commission supervised the process and kept the voting station open past its scheduled closing time so that people still waiting in long lines could vote.

Voting took place on the grounds of the Alberta Legislature, where it was scheduled to run from morning into the evening. According to SFJ, the ballot asked participants whether the Indian state of Punjab should become an independent country called Khalistan. The group said observers were present, though the reported turnout and the observers’ affiliations have not been independently confirmed.

A Non-Binding Vote With Diplomatic Weight

The vote carries no legal authority. It was organized by a private group rather than by Canadian or Indian electoral authorities, and it does not change the political status of Punjab in any way.

India rejects the demand for Khalistan and has banned SFJ. Indian authorities have said similar ballots in the past had no official bearing on the country’s territorial integrity, and intelligence agencies kept a close watch on the Edmonton event, according to Indian media reporting.

The timing drew attention in both capitals. The vote came as India and Canada work to rebuild ties across trade, energy, technology and security, with a Canadian trade delegation of nearly 300 business representatives visiting India just days earlier. Alberta’s own separate non-binding provincial ballot on October 19 added another layer, and commentators noted the overlapping “referendum” language could confuse voters.

What Comes Next

Pannun announced that SFJ will launch a campaign on November 1 to register two million voters for its referendum drive. He also outlined the group’s broader strategy, including more votes abroad, support for political and youth movements in Punjab, and calls for foreign investors to pressure the Indian government. These were his claims, reported at the event, and have not been independently established.

The Khalistan question has strained New Delhi–Ottawa relations, particularly since the 2023 killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. Whether Edmonton marks real momentum or stays symbolic, the vote is likely to keep the issue in diplomatic view. For more international reporting, visit Watan News.
