Malaysia’s key institutions will hold a series of meetings on Tuesday to prepare the country against rising cyber and geopolitical threats, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim told parliament. The sessions will bring together government departments and financial institutions to assess risks to national security and economic stability.

FAKTA

  • Announcement: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim told parliament on Tuesday, 3 November, that a series of security meetings will be held.
  • Who leads them: The government’s chief secretary and the central bank governor will convene separate meetings with departments and financial institutions.
  • Trigger: Advice issued to citizens in the European Union, Canada and Japan to stockpile food after cyberattacks hit digital infrastructure and administrative systems in Europe and the wider Western world.
  • Already done: Malaysia’s National Security Council met on Monday to review existing mechanisms and coordination between ministries, agencies and security forces.
  • Next step: The National Security Council’s director general will give a special closed briefing to all lawmakers within the next one to two days.

Why Malaysia Is Acting Now

Anwar said the meetings are a response to a changing threat picture. Cyberattacks have disrupted digital infrastructure across Europe and other Western countries, including administrative systems, prompting governments in the European Union, Canada and Japan to advise their citizens to keep emergency food supplies.

Malaysia, he said, is among the countries that could be targeted because its digital and data-centre capabilities are among the strongest in the region and can rival those of European countries. He also noted that Malaysia’s positions on issues such as Palestine and Gaza are viewed as controversial in some countries, which he said adds to the attention the country may attract.

What the Meetings Will Cover

The chief secretary’s meeting will focus on government departments, while the central bank governor’s session will bring in financial institutions. Together, they are expected to examine possible threats to important systems, test how ready institutions are, and improve coordination so the country can respond quickly to unexpected challenges.

Anwar said the National Security Council’s meeting on Monday had already reviewed the mechanisms currently available, how ministries, agencies and security forces coordinate, and how prepared the country is for any eventuality. He said the discussions covered threats from both domestic and foreign sources and the need to strengthen the ability to respond at speed.

Regional Concerns on the Agenda

The prime minister said Malaysia continues to monitor several international developments, including tensions in the Middle East, developments in Yemen and the Red Sea, and security threats in Europe. He told parliament that these developments could affect Malaysia’s people and economy.

Anwar also cited foreign intelligence activity in neighbouring countries, including Israel’s, and Israeli enclaves in Phuket and southern Thailand, which he said Malaysian intelligence bodies regard as a potential threat to the country. His remarks were presented as the government’s own security assessment, and the closed briefing to lawmakers is intended to give parliamentarians a fuller picture of the challenges involved.
