At Least 33 Killed as Strike Hits Ukraine Aid Centre in Komyshuvakha, UN Monitors Say Attack Likely Broke International Law

At least 33 people were killed when a school building being used as a shelter and humanitarian aid distribution point in the village of Komyshuvakha, in Ukraine’s southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, was bombed on Monday, 2 November 2026, Ukrainian officials said, with more than 50 people feared still trapped under the rubble.

FAKTA

  • At least 33 people were killed in the strike on Komyshuvakha on 2 November, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on 3 November in Berlin.
  • More than 50 people were feared trapped under the rubble, and five people had been rescued, according to the president’s account.
  • Two rescue workers and four police officers were among those killed, Ukrainian emergency services said.
  • The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine said the attack likely violated international humanitarian law, noting that the timing and location of the aid distribution were well publicised.
  • Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces had targeted Ukrainian military units around Komyshuvakha and two other settlements, and said up to 25 Ukrainian servicemen had been killed.

Zelensky said residents gathered at the site every Monday to collect humanitarian packages, and that local authorities had announced the distribution for between 10 a.m. and noon on 2 November on a social media channel with nearly 5,000 subscribers. There were no classes at the school because the village lies close to the front line, he said.

According to Ukrainian officials, the first bombs fell just as people were arriving, and a second strike then hit the shelter where people had fled. The UN mission said powerful aerial glide bombs were used and that the distribution’s timing and location were well publicised. Danielle Bell, head of the UN mission, said the attack appeared to violate fundamental principles of international humanitarian law.

Power infrastructure has also been hit in a wider wave of Russian strikes across Ukraine.

Wider strikes on Ukraine’s power grid

The Komyshuvakha strike came alongside a large overnight Russian aerial assault. Zelensky said Russia launched 289 drones, 17 ballistic missiles and 59 cruise missiles overnight, hitting power plants and substations from Odesa in the south to Rivne in the west. Ukraine’s largest private generating company, DTEK, said three of its five thermal power plants had been knocked offline.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said its troops had struck electricity facilities in several regions that it said supply power to military factories. The attacks came less than two days after the end of a brief humanitarian truce in the Russian-controlled town of Oleshky, agreed with the help of US First Lady Melania Trump, and a week before US-brokered peace talks were due to resume in Abu Dhabi on 10–11 November.

The European Commission said it would host a meeting on Ukraine on Wednesday with the United States, NATO and European allies, as well as Ukraine itself, and Britain and France said about 2,800 troops from 11 European countries would take part in a 9–22 November exercise in Poland to rehearse the deployment of a multinational force after any end to the war.
