Somali National Army soldiers in Somalia

Dozens of Somali government soldiers have been killed in a major battle with al-Shabaab fighters in southern Somalia, in one of the bloodiest single engagements between the army and the militant group in recent months. The fighting broke out in the Jameeco area of Buurhakaba district, where the militants struck a national army position and the two sides fought at close quarters.

Two soldiers who took part in the battle said the army suffered heavy losses, while Somalia’s defence ministry said government forces killed around 75 militants and wounded 56 more. The ministry did not state how many soldiers were killed or wounded.

Somali soldiers killed as al-Shabaab storms army position

According to the defence ministry, the militants opened the assault with vehicles loaded with explosives, striking the army position before the fighting spread. One soldier said the car bombs wrecked five military vehicles, while the ministry confirmed that some army vehicles were damaged in the attack. The wounded were evacuated to Mogadishu, where hospitals received more than 100 injured soldiers, one of the soldiers said.

Two very different tolls

The accounts of the battle differ sharply depending on the source. The defence ministry presented the engagement as a costly defeat for the militants, reporting about 75 of their fighters killed and 56 wounded, but it gave no figure for army casualties. The soldiers who spoke about the fighting described a much grimmer picture for the army, with dozens of their comrades dead and scores wounded.

Such gaps are common after heavy fighting in Somalia, where independent access to battle areas is limited and both sides tend to report the outcome in their own favour. The accounts agree on one thing, however: the scale of the violence, with heavy casualties on both sides.

A conflict now in its third decade

Somalia, in the Horn of Africa, has been grappling with the al-Shabaab insurgency for nearly twenty years. The group seeks to impose its own strict rule on the country, and it remains capable of mounting large, complex attacks despite years of military pressure from Somali forces and their international partners.

The country has endured conflict and clan fighting with no strong central government since the fall of autocratic ruler Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991. For ordinary Somalis, the latest battle is another reminder that the war is far from over. For more international coverage, visit Watan News.
