Thailand’s government has agreed on the timetable for the first censure debate facing Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, setting up a four-day parliamentary showdown in December that will test his coalition’s unity and the opposition’s case against his administration.

The debate is scheduled for December 7 to 11, with a confidence vote on the final day. The timetable was agreed between government and opposition whips and announced by a government spokesperson on Tuesday, November 3.

FAKTA

  • Debate dates: December 7 to 11, 2026, with a confidence vote on December 11.
  • Target of the motion: Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and 18 ministers from the ruling Bhumjaithai Party.
  • House arithmetic: The government holds 292 seats in the 499-member House; the opposition holds 207.
  • Removal threshold: Removing the prime minister or a minister requires support from more than half of House members.
  • Not joining the motion: The Kla Tham Party, with 58 lawmakers, has not joined the opposition motion.

Thailand censure debate: what the opposition alleges

Opposition parties say they will use the debate to challenge the government’s record in several areas. Their allegations include suspected irregularities in the process used to elect members of the upper house, and concerns about corruption in examinations for local government posts.

They also accuse the government of mismanaging the economy and of handling recent flooding poorly. Under parliamentary rules, the opposition may file a no-confidence motion once a year, and its leaders have said they intend to use this year’s opportunity to question ministers in detail.

Anutin’s party has rejected the allegations and said its ministers are ready to answer questions in parliament, pointing to its strong victory in February’s election.

The numbers that will decide the vote

On paper, the government enters the debate with a clear advantage. Its 292 seats give it a majority in the 499-member chamber, while the opposition’s 207 seats fall short of the number needed to remove a minister.

The Kla Tham Party’s decision not to join the motion further weakens the opposition’s position. With 58 lawmakers outside both the coalition and the motion, the opposition lacks the votes for a successful challenge.

Political science lecturer Wanwichit Boonprong of Rangsit University said Anutin was expected to survive the vote because of that majority, while noting that the proceedings could still lead to changes in the cabinet afterwards.

What happens next

Ministers are expected to spend the coming weeks preparing responses to each allegation, while opposition parties finalise their speakers for the four-day debate.

Beyond the immediate vote, the proceedings are likely to shape Thailand’s political direction in the months ahead. A comfortable government win would strengthen Anutin’s position, while a difficult debate, even without a defeat, could increase pressure for a cabinet reshuffle.
