Trump Zelenskiy feud: White House behind Ukrainian flag, symbolic illustration

The Trump Zelenskiy feud has hardened into a serious rift between Washington and Kyiv, and Ukraine now fears that the most valuable pieces of American backing — military intelligence and satellite communications — could be scaled back or switched off. The dispute is unsettling Ukraine’s defence planning as Russia keeps striking the country’s energy grid ahead of another winter of war.

FAKTA

  • President Volodymyr Zelenskiy says Ukraine received no advance warning from Western partners before a deadly Russian strike on Kyiv this week.
  • US officials reportedly warned Ukrainian commanders that intelligence sharing could be reduced or cut off; President Donald Trump says sharing continues.
  • Ukraine’s military-grade Starshield satellite system was disrupted overnight on 14 October. Reuters reported that two US officials and a Western official linked the disruption to an order originating from the White House. Service has since been partly restored.
  • Trump has pressed Zelenskiy to stop Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy facilities and moved to ease sanctions on Russian diesel amid concern over fuel prices ahead of November’s midterm elections.
  • Analysts warn that a sustained loss of US support could embolden Moscow at a critical moment in the war.

The Trump Zelenskiy feud over intelligence and satellite links

The clearest sign of how far the rift has gone came this week, when Zelenskiy said Ukraine had received no warning before a deadly Russian attack on the capital. Without reliable American intelligence, Ukrainian forces face greater difficulty detecting incoming missiles and drones aimed at energy infrastructure.

The Starshield episode deepened the alarm. The system keeps Ukraine’s forces connected on the battlefield, and its overnight disruption briefly left Ukrainian units exposed during Russian attacks. US officials have denied that Trump ordered the service shut off, while SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk has pointed the finger back at the White House. The service has since been partly restored.

Energy strikes, sanctions and politics

The friction intensified after Trump criticised Zelenskiy over Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy facilities, linking them to fuel prices at home — a sensitive issue ahead of the midterm elections. He also agreed to lift sanctions on Russian diesel to ease prices at the pump, a move Kyiv sees as handing Moscow an economic lifeline.

Zelenskiy has rejected Trump’s demand to halt the strikes, arguing that Russia keeps hitting Ukrainian cities and power plants, and has accused Washington of appearing to favour Moscow. Former US diplomat Daniel Fried warned that weakening support for Ukraine could encourage Russian President Vladimir Putin to keep fighting, while former foreign policy adviser Brett Bruen suggested Zelenskiy may be counting on a post-midterm shift in the political balance.

Kyiv still wants to talk

Despite the sharp exchanges, Ukrainian officials say Kyiv remains willing to engage with Trump’s representatives and pursue diplomatic talks. Trump has said he intends to deal with both leaders because he wants the war to end, and some Republican lawmakers continue to oppose pressing Kyiv into a settlement favourable to Moscow.
