Yemeni mountains with a military convoy during Operation Fajr al-Yemen against Houthi forces

Yemen’s armed forces say their ongoing Operation Fajr al-Yemen has inflicted heavy losses on Houthi forces, claiming about 950 Houthi fighters killed and 380 military vehicles and pieces of equipment destroyed or disabled. Military spokesperson Colonel Majid al-Nazili said the toll followed 1,879 operations conducted against Houthi positions, according to an official statement reported on Tuesday.

FAKTA

  • Claim: 1,879 operations against Houthi positions under Operation Fajr al-Yemen
  • Claimed toll: about 950 Houthi fighters killed; 380 military vehicles and equipment destroyed or disabled
  • Spokesperson: Colonel Majid al-Nazili, Yemen’s armed forces
  • Weapons used: fighter aircraft, drones, artillery, rocket launchers and sniper units
  • Key targets: fortified positions, command centres, artillery units, weapons warehouses and supply networks
  • Fighting reported around Taiz, including strikes on Houthi reinforcements heading to frontline areas
  • The casualty and damage figures have not been independently verified

Operation Spans Multiple Fronts

According to the military statement, government forces deployed fighter aircraft, drones, artillery, rocket launchers and sniper units against Houthi positions. The spokesperson said the strikes targeted fortified positions, defensive facilities, command centres, artillery units, rocket launchers, surveillance posts and intelligence facilities, as well as warehouses storing weapons and ammunition.

The operation also went after the logistics keeping Houthi fighters supplied. Transportation routes and supply networks were hit, which the military says disrupted firing positions and made it harder for the group’s command structure to operate. In Taiz, airstrikes reportedly struck Houthi reinforcements and groups moving toward frontline areas, scattering fighter gatherings and hindering efforts to strengthen positions.

The military says engineering teams are now clearing recovered areas of landmines and unexploded devices, work it describes as necessary to make the areas safer for returning personnel and civilians. Al-Nazili maintained that the operation was carried out in line with international humanitarian law, citing target distinction, proportionality and precautions to minimise harm to civilians and civilian property.

Claims Unverified Amid Wider Escalation

The figures announced by Yemen’s armed forces are the military’s own claims and have not been independently verified. The Houthis have not publicly confirmed the reported losses. Such claims should therefore be read as one side’s account of the fighting, not as established fact.

The statement is the latest in a series of casualty claims issued by the Yemeni military since the offensive, named Fajr al-Yemen — Arabic for Dawn of Yemen — began in early October. Government forces under the internationally recognised administration have been pushing to retake territory held by the Houthi movement, also known as Ansar Allah, which has controlled the capital Sanaa since 2014.

The renewed fighting has concentrated around Taiz and along Yemen’s Red Sea coast, areas seen as key to the wider conflict. Military claims from both sides of Yemen’s long-running war have historically been difficult to verify independently, with access to battlefronts heavily restricted.
