The week aims to raise environmental awareness, build a culture of sustainability across society, and encourage people and institutions to adopt more sustainable lifestyles and help protect the environment and natural resources, according to the organisers.

Qatar Sustainability Week 2026: built around everyday action

Qatar Sustainability Week brings together government, private-sector and civil-society institutions. Its programme mixes community workshops, specialised activities and corporate initiatives designed to champion sustainable practices in daily life.

Earthna’s executive director, Dr Gonzalo Castro de la Mata, said at the launch announcement that the focus remains firmly on inspiring long-term behaviour change aligned with Qatar National Vision 2030. By giving people practical tools to conserve resources and reduce waste, he said, the week aims to shape a resilient and sustainable future for generations to come.

Ahmed Mohammed Al Sada, assistant undersecretary for climate change affairs at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, described the week as a national platform that strengthens cooperation between government bodies, the private sector and civil society. He said the ministry sees it as a chance to turn environmental awareness into practical, lasting behaviour, with outcomes that extend well beyond the week itself.

Ambassadors open the week

The opening day sets the tone. United Development Company (UDC), which is taking part with six environmental, educational and community initiatives across The Pearl and Gewan Islands, said its programme begins on 31 October with the Sustainability Ambassadors Race.

The same day, “The Pearl Through Our Children’s Eyes” exhibition opens in Qanat Quartier, featuring 50 paintings, recycled-art pieces and environmental sculptures made by children. UDC’s executive director of public services, Abdullatif Ali Al Yafei, said the event offers an opportunity to turn sustainability from a concept into a practical experience, combining environmental action, learning and community participation.

The ambassador theme runs through the week: residents, employees, families and partners are brought together in activities that promote environmental awareness, community engagement and social responsibility, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Student ambassador programmes elsewhere show the same idea at work: young people leading climate action in their own schools and communities, as seen in the European student ambassador programme across nine universities.

Mangroves, books and food waste

UDC’s programme also includes awareness sessions on the mangrove forest restoration project at Gewan Island’s Cluster 5, supported by educational content on Qatar’s mangrove ecosystems. Mangroves protect coastlines, support marine life and store carbon, and the sessions aim to explain why restoring them matters for Qatar’s shores.

Community initiatives include the “Give Your Books a Second Chance” book donation campaign and “Plant Today for a Greener Tomorrow”, an activity offering participants opportunities to learn about gardening. Environmental efforts also include a plastic recycling initiative.

New this year, UDC will introduce a smart biodigester system on The Pearl to convert food waste into fertiliser using advanced scientific methods, turning a daily waste stream into something useful for growing plants.

A decade of scale

Since its first edition in 2016, and through 2025, the campaign has engaged more than one million participants across roughly 3,400 events in collaboration with approximately 2,000 partner organisations, according to the organisers. That record is why the week is presented as a national campaign rather than a single event: it directly supports national efforts to fulfil Qatar National Vision 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The 2026 edition brings together a wide line-up of strategic partners, including ministries, Qatar Free Zones Authority, Doha Bank, UDC, Qatar Museums, Qatar Science and Technology Park and Qatar Tourism, alongside community partners ranging from sports and conservation groups to business councils.

For climate desks watching the Gulf, the week is also a reminder of how ambassador and volunteer networks carry climate action beyond conference halls: the same people who race, plant, sort waste and exhibit children’s art on day one are the local networks that keep the habits going after 7 November.
