Brazil has called in Argentina’s highest diplomat in Brasília to explain Argentina’s role in the departure of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro to the United States after his defeat in the presidential election, two sources in the Brazilian government said on Friday. The move has opened a fresh chapter in the Brazil Argentina Bolsonaro row between South America’s two largest countries — though Argentina has denied that any summons took place.
FAKTA
- Brazil’s foreign ministry summoned Argentina’s chargé d’affaires in Brasília, María Emilia Cortés, on Thursday, according to two Brazilian government sources cited by Reuters.
- Cortés was received by João Marcelo de Queiroz, the ministry’s South America Department director, at the Itamaraty Palace in Brasília.
- Argentina’s Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno wrote on X that “there was no request for explanation”, while Brazil’s foreign ministry declined to comment.
- Flávio Bolsonaro, his wife and their two daughters crossed into northern Argentina on Tuesday evening and flew from Puerto Iguazú to Miami via Guayaquil, Ecuador, arriving on Wednesday morning.
- His departure violated a Brazilian Supreme Court order requiring him to surrender his passports and remain in Brazil while under investigation in a money-laundering probe, in which he denies wrongdoing.
The summons and Argentina’s denial
According to Reuters, Brazil’s foreign ministry summoned Cortés on Thursday to seek an explanation of the Argentine government’s role in the senator’s departure. One of the sources said she was received by de Queiroz, the ministry’s South America Department director. The Brazilian foreign ministry itself declined to comment on the reports.
Argentina’s response was swift and flatly contradictory. Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno, commenting on a media report about the move, wrote on X that “there was no request for explanation”. The two accounts leave the exact diplomatic status of Thursday’s meeting disputed, even as Brazilian and Argentine media confirmed that a meeting at the Itamaraty Palace did take place.
El País, citing diplomatic sources, reported that the meeting took place on Thursday afternoon and that Brazilian diplomats described the gesture as an expression of the Brazilian government’s “discomfort”, rather than the start of an escalation. According to the same report, no further meeting is planned between Cortés and Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, who is attending the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in Atlanta, and Brasília intends to keep a low profile and move on as quickly as possible.
The flight from Brazil to Miami
Argentine authorities said Bolsonaro, his wife and their two daughters crossed a bridge into northern Argentina on Tuesday evening before boarding a chartered aircraft. El País reported that the group boarded a private flight from Puerto Iguazú just after midnight, stopped briefly in Guayaquil, and flew on to Miami, with the aircraft flying over Paraguay, Bolivia and Peru to avoid Brazilian airspace.
The senator arrived in the United States on Wednesday morning. In a letter released the same day, in which he described himself as Brazil’s rightful “leader”, he thanked Argentine President Javier Milei for his assistance, without providing further details.
Bolsonaro was defeated by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Sunday’s presidential runoff election. His departure from Brazil violated a Supreme Court order requiring him to surrender his passports and remain in the country as part of a money-laundering investigation. Bolsonaro has said he is a victim of judicial persecution and denies wrongdoing.

Why the Brazil Argentina Bolsonaro row matters
The episode is the latest strain in an already damaged relationship. After Milei travelled to Brazil earlier this year for the launch of Bolsonaro’s presidential campaign, and repeatedly insulted Lula in media interviews, Brazil downgraded ties with Argentina in August and permanently recalled its ambassador. Since then the two countries have conducted relations through their chargés d’affaires, a lower diplomatic level.
Argentina has sought to frame the senator’s transit as a migration matter, noting that there was no effective arrest order against him and that he entered the country with valid documents. Brazilian reporting has separately raised questions about whether people linked to the Argentine government helped organise the journey: the news outlet UOL reported that Santiago Caputo, an adviser close to Milei, may have played a role and was reported to have been in the border region. That allegation has not been confirmed by either government and remains a journalistic report, not an established fact.
President Lula has avoided commenting publicly on the flight or on any possible Argentine assistance in recent hours, according to El País, while the senator remains under investigation in Brazil over alleged corruption, money laundering and currency evasion offences.
What happens next
According to Brazilian press reports, Cortés undertook to relay the contents of Thursday’s meeting to the government in Buenos Aires. No escalation is expected from Brasília’s side, El País reported, with Brazilian diplomats describing the summons as a standard diplomatic procedure to request information about an episode that remains unclear.
The departure itself remains under investigation in Brazil, and the diplomatic dispute is likely to linger as long as questions remain about how a senator under a travel ban was able to leave the country and reach the United States within days of an election defeat.
